Free Seminars Put Focus on Business Success at Hospitality 2011
A series of free Business Seminars – many featuring leading industry experts sharing their personal experience and advice on being successful – has been added to the programme for Hospitality 2011, which runs at the NEC Birmingham from 24th-26th January.
There will be 11 Business Seminars in total, which will be staged during the three days of the show – aiming to give visitors the tools to succeed in an increasingly challenging market place. They will cover a range of issues including developing a new hotel, sustainability, legal guidance, tricks of the design trade, public relations and better business advice.
Some will be hosted by well-known figures from the hospitality, leisure and culinary worlds including Alex Polizzi, TV’s Hotel Inspector and manager of Hotel Endsleigh who will discuss what makes a successful hotel and how to create one (12.00-12.45 on 24th January). Robbie Bargh, world-renowned bar consultant and owner of goregousgroup, will provide his expertise on creating the perfect bar in another seminar (12.00-12.45 on 26th January). Silvena Rowe, celebrity chef and executive chef for the Baltic Restaurant Group and Shamil Thakrar, co-founder of self-styled Bombay café, Dishoom, will team up to discuss their industry success stories (14.00-14.45 on 26th January).

Hospitality 2011, which is set to welcome a 12,000 strong audience, covers Food & Drink, Equipment, Interiors, Exteriors & Tableware plus Technology. More than 300 companies in food & drink, equipment, technology and interiors, exteriors & tableware will exhibit at the show.

Monday 24th January 2011
11.00am Get Some Free Legal Advice
Solicitors from Harvey Ingram LLP will be coming to talk about a number of important issues and will be giving ‘some’ free advice. After their presentation they are happy to talk to members of the audience about specific issues in the networking space. Attending will be associate Natalie Thomson (employment law), and partners Richard Miller (retail property law) and Simon Bates (commerce and technology law).
12.00pm An interview with Alex Polizzi
Channel Five’s Hotel Inspector will be talking about the show and discussing what makes a good hotel and how to create one.
2pm Building & Developing a New Hotel
Trevor Gulliver & Fergus Henderson are legends in the London restaurant scene as owners of the multi-award winning St John in Clerkenwell. Now the pair are opening their latest venue; a small and sexy boutique hotel in Leicester Square complete with restaurant and bar. Trevor Gulliver talks us through the process of creating his new ‘icon’, the St John Hotel.
3pm The Future of our Industry
As we come away from one of the worst recessions in living memory, Ufi Ibrahim, Chief Executive of the British Hospitality Association talks about improving profitability, new jobs and government support.
Tuesday 25th January 201111.00am Sustainability
Twenty ways to reduce costs and negative impacts to the environment for under £20 - a series of lively 2 minute presentations introducing new and affordable technologies. This is being presented by Professor Rebecca Hawkins of Oxford Brookes University.
12.00pm Design
A presentation by John Whiles and James Dilley of Jestico & Whiles, the design team behind the award winning hotel concept Citizen M (European Hotel of the Year) talk about this innovative and inspiring ‘hotel for the people’. The first one opened in Amsterdam but the most recent has just opened in Glasgow. Plus a glimpse inside the new ‘W’ Hotel in London.
2pm The A-Z of good PR.
This will take the format of a panel discussion and three expert PR companies are represented by their founders: Maureen Mills of Network London and Sarah Turner of Sleeping Lion. Maureen will be talking about creating an effective PR plan, launching a new venue, and keeping the message fresh through continuous brand awareness and Sarah will be talking about the growing importance of social media marketing. We will discuss how essential pr has been during the economic downturn, as well as how best to stand out from the crowd – lots of useful advice.
3pm Design
CoworthPark, the new country house hotel has opened, as a part of the Dorchester Collection, near Ascot in Berkshire. It is probably the most environmentally-sound large hotel project in the UK to date and definitely one of the most beautifully designed. Rupert Martineau of award winning designers, Fox Linton Associates, was senior designer on the project. Rupert will provide a visual presentation and several designer ‘tricks of the trade’.
Wednesday 26th January 201111am Better Business
Introduced by Jason Freezer of VisitEngland, a panel discussion looking at the best free tools available to improve hospitality business performance, following the Comprehensive Spending Review. Panellists include Andrew Cole of Ramada Hotels.
12pm Creating the Perfect Bar
Gorgeous Group are one of the world’s most successful bar consultancies having created bar concepts across the globe. Nearer to home, they’re the people who made successes of the Dorchester bar, Artesian at the Langham and, most recently, the new bars at the Savoy. Founder Robbie Bargh provides tips and advice on how to maximise spend over the bar.
2pm Success Stories (Young Entrepreneurs)
Three young entrepreneurs have opened new restaurants in the midst of the economic downturn. What have they done to better the odds of success? A panel discussion with celebrity chef Silvena Rowe and young restaurant entrepreneur Shamil Thakrar, and chaired by Stirling Johnstone.
