Sustainable Commitment at The Hospitality Show
There is much confusion about what the term sustainability actually means. The important point to note is that sustainability is not just about being “green” and more environmentally responsible – it is more encompassing than that.
In a nutshell, sustainability is about how an organisation continues to run its activities in a commercially successful way whilst contributing towards a stronger and more just society and reducing its impact on the environment. To achieve ISO 20121, an organisation will need to demonstrate that it has considered within its management system all key financial, economic, social and environmental issues relevant to its operations; focusing solely on environmental issues will not be sufficient.
In October 2012 Fresh Montgomery was the first UK organisers to be registered to ISO 20121, which specifies the requirements for an Event Sustainability Management System to improve the sustainability of events. For more information please go to www.iso20121.org.
Fresh Montgomery were audited by and received their registration through BSI (British Standards Institute). BSI is the National Standards Body of the UK, with a globally recognised reputation for independence, integrity and innovation in the production of standards that promote best practice. Some examples of what Fresh Montgomery have achieved in the last 12 months:
Introduced the Sustainability Pledge and Save and Sustain which is an online calculator to help businesses identify savings in both CO2 and money. So far businesses have made pledges that if fulfilled will result in 3594 tonnes of CO2 and £1,101,026.
At the International Food and Drink Exhibition which took place in March 2013 the Fresh Montgomery team collected food donations from exhibitors for FareShare which is a UK charity supporting communities to relieve food poverty. FareShare confirmed that we had donated enough food for over 82,800 meals!
At Hotelympia Fresh Montgomery have launched a section called Waste Works which has a commercial benefit but also helps visitors to find ways of reducing waste.
We are working to continually improve the ways in which we can make our business more sustainable, in its full sense.
